Our Office: HCPP’s administrative office is located in St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church in Columbia Heights which has an important mission of service and social justice is home to several small nonprofit organizations. Our mailing address is HCPP, 1525 Newton Street NW, Washington, DC 20010.

Important: Please note that our playtime sites are located in programs where it is necessary to protect the privacy and confidentiality of its residents. If you are interested in volunteering, dropping of donations or visiting one of our sites, you must obtain permission prior to showing up unannounced. Thank you for your cooperation!

D.C. General Emergency Family Hypothermia Shelter
Thursdays 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Stadium Armory metro to 1900 Massachusetts Avenue SE
This is the largest emergency family shelter in D.C. and is the first stop for many families seeking shelter. Because of the high need, it is open beyond the hypothermia season, and by the middle of winter there may be upwards of 300 children and their parents staying in the shelter. Volunteers play with children under 5 in a playroom, and create arts and crafts and play board games with children between the ages of 5-13 in the dining room. Playtime is the only weekly children’s program provided in the shelter.

Park Road Emergency Family Shelter
Wednesdays 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Columbia Heights metro to 1448 Park Road NW
This is an emergency family shelter run by Families Forward where 80 children and their parents live. There is a small playroom downstairs where volunteers play with infants and toddlers, and volunteers travel across the street with elementary-aged children to play in small groups in the dining room of the Kelsey Temple Church. Playtime is the only weekly children’s program provided in the shelter.

Turning Point Transitional Housing Program
Monday & Thursday 6:15/6:30 – 8:30 pm
Columbia Heights Metro to 1434 Harvard Street NW
This is a transitional housing program run by the Salvation Army designed for young mothers who receive a range of comprehensive services. Volunteers provide play programs for about 20 children while their mothers attend Life Skills classes twice each week.

Northwest Family Church Network
Monday & Wednesday 6:30-8:30 pm
Convention Center Metro (10 min walk from Gallery Place) to 216 NY Ave. NW
This is a transitional housing program for parents. There are about 60 children living in the building and NCFN recently lost it’s funding to provide children’s programs so HCPP stepped in. Volunteers play with children of all ages both inside a large room with ideal art spaces as well as outside when the weather permits.

Hope Apartments
Saturday 11 am – 1 pm
Far Southeast, Volunteers will carpool from downtown DC to 3715 2nd Street SE
This is a transitional housing program designed for parents in recovery from substance abuse to live with their children which is one of very few programs of this kind in the city. Volunteers play with small groups of mostly elementary-age children in bright cheerful play spaces as well as outside.
